We always take care to make sure that we have first aid supplies and medicines on hand for our families and children. But, sadly enough, we do not take the same care when it comes to our pets. Of course, when a beloved pet becomes ill or gets hurt we do not have anything on hand to care for them. Our primary instinct is to go to the vet, but what if it is a holiday or the vet is out of town or you are in a different town with your pet. Lets take a look at first aid pet medicine every owner should have.
Dosage of medicines is very important and you should consult your vet before administering any medicines to your pet. These are generally based on the weight of your animal. Putting together a first aid kit for your animal is as easy as assembling a kit for your children and can contain most of the same items.
The main thing that should be in your pets first aid kit should be the number for your regular veterinarian and the number of an all hours emergency vet clinic. It is also important that you keep a number for a pet poison control center.
Some basic supplies that you should include are gauze squares, ace bandages, tweezers and cold packs. It may also be a good idea to have a muzzle as injured animals can try to bite. You may also want to pack in supplies like latex gloves, cotton balls or cotton swabs.
You can use a rectal baby thermometer to take your pets temperature. Ask your vet what the normal temperature should be. You should also keep an eye dropper or syringe without the needle to use to administer liquid medications. Other necessities are small scissors and ear wash and eye wash solutions.
There are basic human medications that can be used to treat pets as well as humans. These include your basic antidiarrheal liquid to treat vomiting and stomach ailments, an antihistamine for allergic reactions, and some type of antibacterial cleanser to clean small wounds.
You can give your pet buffered aspirin if they have inflammation and seem to be in pain. Mineral oil can be administered if the pet appears to be constipated and you can treat toxicity with human antacids or activated charcoal. Be sure to discuss the weight to drug ration with your veterinarian.
Pets are important parts of our lives and can be closer to some people than other humans. So it is important that we always keep our pets health and well being in mind.
